Frodo

Frodo action figure

Frodo Baggins is the main protagonist of the story in LOTR and is also the cousin of Bilbo Baggins, the protagonist from The Hobbit. He's just a fun-loving hobbit until Gandalf recruits him to take the magic ring that Bilbo found in The Hobbit and destroy it in Mount Doom in Mordor. Throughout the tale he changes from an innocent to someone who has probably seen too much, but shows his strength of character throughout the adventure.

Early plans for Frodo called for two heads to be sculpted, to show him both happy and sad during the events of the books. There were also plans for a detachable finger so Frodo could be done after the end of the final book. Sting was to be painted to glow in the dark (mimicking the magic of the sword that would glow when orcs were near) and a version of Frodo that was molded in clear plastic to be 'invisible Frodo'. Three versions of Frodo (in addition to the invisible one) were suggested - a Frodo with Gollum, a generic Frodo in Mordor and an Old Frodo from the very end of the books. There was also a donkey sculpted for Frodo that was never used.

There were initially three versions of Frodo released in the second series of figures, but one final version was included as part of the mass-market series. All the figures are articulated with 12 points as follows: two ball-jointed shoulders, two wrists, two ball-jointed thighs, two knees, two elbows, two wrists a waist and neck. There were two chest sculpts used on Frodo - one that was sculpted to represent Mithril armor and one that was bare-chested. Frodo was sculpted by Daniel Horne.

Frodo In Lrien - This shows Frodo as he appeared in Lorien in FOTR and was the 'standard issue' Frodo. He comes with an Elven belt, breeches, tunic, fur-lined jacket, belt and scabbard, the sword Sting, pack, Elven cloak, walking stick, phial of Galadriel sculpted on the belt and a packet of lembas. This Frodo has the mitril chest.

Frodo In The Barrow-downs - This version of Frodo is how he appeared when the Barrow Wights captured him in FOTR. He has white clothing in this variant, with a white shirt, pants and white cloth belt. He has a dual-tone cape with white on the outside and gold for the interior. He had a barrow sword and hexagonal stand and was sold exclusively through Diamond Comics. He uses the bare-chested version of Frodo.

Frodo In The Shire - Frodo in the Shire was sold exclusively through the Toy Vault Toy Club and was limited to 2000 pieces. This shows Frodo as he sets out on the quest from Hobbiton to Rivendell and he has a plain belt, plain cloak, walking stick, pack, blanket, breeches, tunic and plain jacket. He has a hexagonal stand, uses the bare chest and was originally to have a new sculpted belt but a cloth one replaced it.

Frodo the Hobbit - This was the mass market version of Frodo sold to TRU and other larger retailers. He uses the mithril chest and came with Sting and scabbard, blanket, pack, tunic, cloak and belt.
