Gimli and Frodo shared something in common from their characters to The Hobbit - both were relatives of someone who went on that quest. While Frodo's uncle Bilbo was his tie, Gimli's father Gloin was in that company with Bilbo. Gimli is a descendent of Durin and was the first dwarf to enter Lorien since Durin's Day. He became close friends with Legolas of the Fellowship and was enchanted by Galadriel ( of whom he carried a lock of her hair given as a gift). He sailed across the sea with Legolas, being the only dwarf to ever make that journey.

A battle worn version of Gimli was developed to be an exclusive figure, with a bandage on his head and a bloodied shield and notched axe. This would represent Gimli after the Battle of Helm's Deep. However, this version was never used.

Gimli was initially available in three variants and a fourth was planned as a mass-market version. He had two distinct paint schemes for his head, one with red hair and beard and one with gray hair and beard. His bracelets were also painted either silver or gold, depending on the variant. Gimli has 11 points of articulation - bending knees and elbows, twisting thighs, wrists and shoulders, and a twisting neck. Gimli was designed and sculpted by Daniel Horne.

Gimli In Battle - This is the 'standard issue' Gimli and comes with an armored cap, shield and flower axe. He has the red hair paint scheme with silver bracelets and shows Gimli as he appeared many times in battle in LOTR.

Gimli Of The Fellowship - This version was sold exclusively through Diamond Comics and used the gray hair scheme with gold bracelets. He comes with a dragon helmet, battle axe, pipe and hexagonal stand.

Gimli In L�rien - This figure was Toy Vault Toy Club exclusive figure and was limited to 1000 pieces. He has gray hair and gold armbands and comes with a dragon helmet, cloth blindfold, pipe, club, cape and hexagonal stand. He is shown as he appeared when the Fellowhip tool their rest in the Elven lands of Lorien.

Gimli the Dwarf - This is the mass market version of Gimli and has the red hair scheme with silver armbands. He has an armored helm, shield and flower axe.
