Killer Rabbit with Big Pointy Teeth
The 1975 Monty Python classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail had a many memorable scenes, including the Knights Who Say Ni, the Black Knight, and the vicious Rabbit of Caerbannog. How many times have you found yourself unconsciously blurting out a line of dialogue from this film? For example, "Go away before I taunt you a second time," is a favorite of a friend of the RTM Staff.
It is the scene with the Killer Rabbit, which Toy Vault has chosen to celebrate with their first Monty Python plush toy. Toy Vault has the license to create plush toys based on Monty Python, in addition to the Killer Rabbit, they are also making a Dead Parrot plush toy, from the famous "pet shop" sketch from the Monty Python television show. At the 2002 American Internation Toy Fair in New York, Toy Vault showed a plush Killer Sheep in Wolf's Clothing, and mentioned that the line will continue with a Black Knight plush which will feature removable limbs, and a plush Beast of Argghhh. (For collectors more interested in action figures than in plush, Sideshow Toy is releasing several 12-inch action figures from this film.)
The Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog played an important role in the film: it guarded the cave through which the Knights needed to pass. Five Knights, no three, three Knights fell victim to the Rabbit before it was defeated. The remaining members of the quest used the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch to blow the vicious bunny to bits so that they could enter the cave and make their way to the Bridge of Death.
The Killer Rabbit plush toy is every bit as adorable as the real rabbit used in the film. It has a furry tail and pink cloth on its nose, paws, and inner ears. It is about 6 inches tall, 8.5 inches long, and has a bite radius of about three inches.
It wouldn't be a Killer Rabbit if it didn't bite, right? The mouth on this adorable thing opens wide to reveal a pink cloth tongue and lots and lots of Big Pointy Teeth. Toy Vault has added three very nice details to the mouth of the Rabbit:
- velcro - there are velcro tabs so that his mouth can stay closed, hiding his secret until you are ready to unleash him on your guests. The velcro is just in front of the two big bottom teeth and between the middle top teeth.
- cardboard reinforcements - the top and bottom of his mouth have cardboard inside them so that when the mouth opens, the jaws are not just flopping around.
- a pouch in the roof of the mouth - the Big Pointy Teeth at the front of the bottom jaw can fit into the pouch as the mouth closes, so that they are not crushed when you close the Rabbit's mouth.
The Rabbit is "collector friendly" as it comes with an ear tag and is not strapped into a box: you can still play with his mouth while leaving the tag attached. For the more adventurous collector, Toy Vault also produced a variant bloody Rabbit with blood spatters around its mouth and bloody hand prints along its body. The bloody version is limited to 500.
The Rabbit plush toy has a suggested retail price of $15 to $20 USD and is available at comic book stores and several online retailers.
