I tried Elmer's Tack for putty, its easy to shape and combined with a glue called Zap-A-Gap that hardens overtop . It's pretty strong and easy (great for sculping hair)
I use Acrylic paints mostly
Dick Grayson Batman
JLA Batman figure with Silver Age Batman Head
putty for longer ears
utility belt made from cloth and plastic sprue
hand cut cloth cape
hand painted figure
Dick Grayson Robin
Nightwing figure
trim or scrape of parts of mask to make into domino mask
cut off most of collar and sanded details of figure
used putty to make gloves and boots
used strip of silk/nylon to finish bottom of tunic, glued in place after painting shorts
cut and trimmed belt using existing belt painted black, added plastic sprue for capsules on belt (painted yellow)
hand painted figure
glued plastic strip and collar to finish collar, painted yellow. cut and shaped cape out of kitchen towel? (made of some kind of foam, easy to shape but very hard to glue and paint as it soaks into the towel) had to slip cape under collar which took some trimming and glued into place. after it dries, painted top of cape with multiple coats.
Earth 2 Robin
Silver age Batman, Silver Age Robin head
sand off bat emblem touch up gray paint to match, paint earth 2 robin symbol on chest
pop off Batman's head (I used this head on Grayson Batman) and remove cape. for Robin's cape you can use sheet styrene for the collar, but I cut a silver age robin cape and used the top of it, flipped it over and glued them together. Then I painted the cape yellow (yellow has to be the hardest color to make smooth and even (at least for me) and reattached onto the figure. Use the Silver Age Robin head to finish it off. Scrape off part off his mask and then use a pen to finish detailing the mask.
Robin Jason Todd
Silver Age Robin, Aquaman head? heh,heh
using an exacto knife I thinned out the face and jaw to look a little younger. Add putty to hair to partly cover his ears and to add hair in front of his face and when it's done and dry, hand paint the mask. This was the fun part, using my Elmer's tack to shape the neck and match the height of a regular Silver age Robin (he'll be just a touch taller because of the hair) but also gives Jason a very different look. I wanted a longer cape like it was in the comics so I used my kitchen rag again, shaped and glued it into place, then added the collar out of putty and painted the top of the cape yellow. I made the knife out of plastic sprue. Voila!
Robin Stephanie Brown
Contemporary WonderGirl
remove the detail on her shirt to make it even around the torso, as well as the top of her shirt. If you're careful, shave of one side of her boots with and exacto knife to match the angle they should be (45-60 degrees) if you're really good you won't even have to paint the boots. Paint the legs a dark green leaving her spanky pants red. Make a template to design the skirt and use either red fabric or painted fabric and attach to body.use putty to make her utility belt(it also hides the flaws in the skirt) and paint yellow.Paint the top of the tunic red, and paint the Robin insignia. Take 3 small pieces of plastic painted yellow and attach to front of tunic. Use putty to build the sleeves (you can use small pieces of sprue to make the pouches on the sleeves and gloves) Also use putty and sprue to make gloves out of the bracelets. Finish painting the arms, sleeves and gloves. Paint the mask on the head.
Now pop the head off.I planned to use a Silver Age Batman cape painted yellow and black but I had a cape from a 90's Batman that fit perfectly. paint the cape, slip it on the figure and put the head back on and you're set.
Robin Tim Drake
Kenner Robin or Contemporary Robin (your choice)
since this is mostly a repaint, you only have to worry about are the cape and gauntelets, but I did sand down the pouches on the sleeves and gloves to make them smooth. I then added the scallops to the gloves with plastic styrene. Add putty around the belt and using a blade or exacto shape out the pouches on his belt. After painting add detailing with a pen or marker. For this Robin I removed the head and took the cape off. I removed the old cape and added my Kitchen cloth (it's aready yellow) and glued it back on. Then paint the top of cape black. reattach to body and add head. I also used a pen to add some detail to the mask and add a touch of hair. Another Robin!
