The Stands
I loved all the light-up stands that came with the new DST Essence of... line, shown here: Essence of Buffy, Essence of Spike, and Essence of Willow.
Each of the stands inspired me to make a scene from BtVS, which I felt also worked with the Essence of... theme.
The vampire being dusted in the sewer tunnel was the perfect inspiration for the scene from "The Prom". I repainted the Essence of Buffy stand to make the sewer tunnel and dusted vampire. I made the tunnel darker and more slimy. I added dusting paint-effect to the vampire.
I've used the Essence of Spike stand before but here it lent itself to the camp fire vision in "Intervention". I added a large rock to hide the teddy and give Buffy something to sit on. I painted all the rocks grey. I painted the floor in a sandy-colour and added a dusting of sand to the rocks. I painted the base of the stand in black. I also used black on the fire to make it more dramatic.
I wanted to use Essence of Willow stand as part of the Magic Box. Due to the height of the books, it made sense to have a tall figure in front of them. I decided to make Anya standing on a chair in "Tabula Rasa". The original stand had candles on it. I removed them but kept the bulbs on wire. I used sculpting clay to make a swirl around her chair. I then made a mould and cast the swirl in translucent green plastic. I tucked the lights up under the swirl, so that it glowed greeny-orange when lit. I added 4 bunnies, each painted a different colour.
Essence of Bangel: Heartbreaking-Sewer-Talk Buffy & Angel
For Angel, I used the deluxe Hawaiian shirt figure. I sculpted his hair in his Season 3 style. I covered the articulation in his legs and made his trousers longer. I sculpted the loose jumper and donkey-jacket. I put him in a position where he looks like he's walking toward Buffy and trying to make a point.
I painted Angel in shades of black clothing. I gave him pale skin, a grim expression, and focused his eyes on Buffy.
For Buffy I used a Willow figure with deluxe Buffy head and bare arms. I covered the articulation in her legs and made her jeans longer. I sculpted her top and long hair. I put her in a position of staking the vampire, but keeping her attention on Angel.
I painted her with faded jeans and a sheer lilac top over a black camisole. The top has some glittery detail at the bottom. I gave her an intense expression, as she looks back at Angel, suspecting bad news.
Essence of the Slayer: Vision-Quest Buffy & the First Slayer
For the First Slayer, I used a Texas Chainsaw Massacre Erin body with Lost Sun legs. I joined her legs to the body and made her thighs a bit more muscular. I altered her face to give her a rounded forehead, high cheekbones and fuller lips. I sculpted her ragged outfit and her dreadlocks.
I painted her dark skin and gave it a nice sheen with an ochre glaze. I painted her off-white clothing, sheer in some places. I gave her the skull-shaped face paint and made her dreadlocks look dusty. She's looking at Buffy across the fire.
For Buffy, I used a deluxe Buffy with Willow legs. I removed the pelvis, put her into sitting position and sculpted over all her joints. I sculpted the polo-neck jumper, long coat and her tied-back hair.
I painted her clothing in shades of brown. I painted her sitting and thinking, just prior to seeing the First Slayer.
Essence of Anya: Accidental-Bunny Creator Anya
For Anya, I used an Anya figure with deluxe Buffy arms. I sculpted her hair, blouse and skirt frills. I put her in a position clutching the spell book, and sculpted over the articulation.
I painted her looking down at the spell book with worry. I used paint to do the flowery shirt pattern on her blouse, and red metallic pen on the skirt.
