DC Direct's Tom Strong Deluxe Action Figure Set
From The Remote Island of Attabar Teru Comes The Hero of Millenium City
DC Direct released the Tom Strong Deluxe Action Figure set to comic book and specialty stores on August 30, 2000. The set consists of fully-poseable action figures of adventurer and hero, Tom Strong and his trusty robotic valet, Pnueman. This latest offering from DC Direct continues the lines commitment to producing high-quality toys that are true to their source material.
This deluxe set is based on Alan Moore's Tom Strong comic book, which is part of Moore's America's Best Comics line from Wildstorm. DC Comics' ownership of Wildstorm made pairing this terrific property and DC Direct a natural and the results are truly spectacular.
The Tom Strong figure, especially, looks as though it's a Chris Sprouse illustration come to "life" and Pneuman looks absolutely perfect as well. These toys just scream adventure!
While the articulation isn't the highest around, it's still better than much of what's out there. Tom Strong has ball-jointed shoulders, which help him fit into his helicopter backpack but also give the figure a much greater range of motion than most DC Direct figures.
Speaking of accessories, this set comes loaded with cool stuff. Tom comes with some basic gear like his goggles, a knife and a gun to help out on all those crazy adventures, but the high point has got to be the way-cool helicopter backpack. The 'copter features an impressive 10.5" blade-span, and the blades are able to rotate manually.
One thing that was quite impressive about the figure is that Tom has no problem standing with, or without, the backpack. That's a rarity in the figure world where many toys either need their cumbersome accessory to aid in balancing the figure, or the accessory just helps tip the thing over! Not here. It works perfect either way.
