A New Magazine of Toy Culture

The 1997 Comic Con International in San Diego was host to the premiere of a new toy collecting magazine. The creative team of the new magazine go figure! was on hand to give this project an enthusiastic launch.

gofig1.jpg - 23.6 Kgofig2.jpg - 22.3 KThe first issue of this promising mag features four different covers. Now, before you cry "Foul!" realize that there is actually a rationale behind the variants: It's KISS! Each cover shows one of the four band members with their corresponding McFarlane Toys action figure. The premiere issue includes an in depth article on both McFarlane Toys and KISS. Paul Stanley states that his action figure is romantically involved with another action figure who shall remain nameless. This and other revelations are abundant throughout.

Editor-in-chief and creative director Ryan Brookhart is no stranger to magazines or toys. He's been involved with both for a number of years. This Ohio native hopes to bring a collector's outlook and a fresh perspective to toy reporting.

At the San Diego Comic Con, two members of Brookhart's staff participated in an Action Figure Collecting Panel with the Raving Toy Maniac's own Eric G. Myers and Jason A. Geyer. Contributing Editor Tim Sullivan and Staff Artist Brad Parker represented their new endeavor and gave the crowd a hint of things to come. Parker's work can be seen throughout the magazine, including the introduction of an ongoing action figure comic called "Play Things." Some of Parker's work will be seen later this year in a graphic novel centered around some of the Golden Age's greatest heroes: The Justice Society of America!

brookhart.jpg - 5.3 K go figure! promises a glimpse into the world of action figure collecting that goes beyond what's hitting the shelves. Look for retrospectives of older niche lines as well as interviews with some of the industry's movers and shakers. We are anxious to see how this up and coming magazine develops over its next few issues.

Look for go figure! in bookstores and magazine racks across the country soon. A subscription to this bi-monthly magazine costs $35 (6 issues). You can send a check or money order to:
