MIAMI, June 18 -- Burger King Corporation today donated 26,000 toys to charity, benefiting the children of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida and the CHARLEE Program.
"Burger King Corporation is pleased to make this donation to two local charities whose work goes well beyond this community," said Chris Clouser, executive vice president & chief global marketing officer, Burger King Corporation. "This is just one way, or rather 26,000 ways, in which we can give back to the communities in which we do business."
Burger King Corporation donated an assorted 1,000 toys to the Make-A-Wish of Southern Florida, which grants the wishes of children who have life-
threatening illnesses in Broward, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Lee, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach counties. The toys were used as giveaways at Make-A-Wish of Southern Florida's 13th annual "Celebration of Life" Birthday Party held last Saturday, June 15, 2002 at Pro Player Stadium. The "Celebration" brought together nearly 2,000 people, including children with life-threatening illnesses who have had a wish granted by Make-A-Wish.
"The birthday party is our way of saluting all the families we've come to know and love," said Make-A-Wish of Southern Florida President & CEO Nancy Strom. "It's heartbreaking for everyone when a child is sick and we're happy to provide a night of fun and that Burger King Corporation could participate in a very real way."
Additionally, Burger King Corporation donated 25,000 toys to the CHARLEE Program, a provider of community-based care to emotionally disturbed children in the foster care system. CHARLEE, which stands for Children Have All Rights: Legal, Educational, and Emotional, will use the toys for birthday celebrations, its Back-to-School backpack program and holiday gift bags. CHARLEE will also distribute the toys to local elementary and middle schools as a reward for the recently announced FCAT scores, as well as to six neighborhood centers with which they have an affiliation.
"Burger King Corporation's generous donation will go a long way in making CHARLEE's kids and those affiliated with the [CHARLEE] Program feel rewarded," said Thomas Eugene, Business Development Coordinator for the CHARLEE Program. "Companies like Burger King Corporation realize how powerful their gifts are in making kids lives more enriched and fulfilled."
