HOUSTON, Oct. 22 -- Lines stretched out the door and up the Avenue of the Americas as hundreds of invited guests celebrated the release of the first issue (November 2002) of Newtype USA magazine, the premiere anime (Japanese animation) and manga (graphic novel) monthly in the English-speaking world.
Organized by the New York-based firm New York-Tokyo, with music provided by DJs Beta, Sheroq and Oscar Poche, and with live anime-based video scratching by the SQUARESQUARE collective, the Tribeca Grand's Church Lounge was dense with bodies, dancing, chatting and paging through long-awaited copies of the magazine. Attendees included representatives of the media industry, journalists, artists, anime and comic fans and many others.
"We were very excited with the response," said Newtype USA Editor-in-Chief Bruce Haring. "But we weren't surprised. There's already a tremendous anime fan base in the U.S. that's been dying for a magazine that really covers their interests and lifestyle. We look forward to bringing them more of what they've been craving."
Early distribution of Newtype USA Issue One (the November, 2002 issue) continues at this writing. National retailers carrying the magazine include Suncoast, Sam Goody, Barnes & Noble, Borders, Media Play, Waldenbooks, Fry's, Tower Records and Gordon & Gotch Canada (Chapters/Coles Books). Independent bookstores, comic stores and specialty shops across North America are also carrying the magazine. Subscriptions are available through http://www.newtype-usa.com; single issues may also be purchased through the same site.
