NYPD It was always a tough job and since September 11, both the responsibilities and the honor of being a New York City police officer have escalated. History of New York City police dates back as early as 1658. In 1845, Mayor William Havermeyer recognized the needs of the growing city and made New York the first American city to adopt a full-time professional police force called the Municipal Police. Over time it evolved into the New York Metropolitan Police and was finally designated the NYPD in 1898. Today, the efforts of the 38,000 officers that make up the force have made NYC one of the safest cities in America.
