|
Mattel, Inc. was congratulated today by ASHA, the national professional, scientific and credentialing association for more than 98,000 audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists for introducing the Sign Language Barbie doll now available at Toys ``R'' Us.``Mattel's efforts to raise awareness about hearing loss and alternate forms of communication is highly commendable,'' said ASHA President Jeri Logemann, PhD, CCC-SLP. The new doll, which is packaged in a schoolroom setting, represents a sign language teacher and highlights American Sign Language (ASL) through the use of hand positions on the box and on stickers included with the doll. One hand is permanently molded into the sign for ``I love you.'' ``A doll that models ASL signing will facilitate a better understanding about communication for both hearing children and children who are deaf,'' said Logemann. ``For the future, we hope Mattel, Inc. will remember the millions of children with disabilities and continue to provide toys that serve to educate as well as entertain. We stand ready to support them in this endeavor.'' Consumers who would like more information about the Sign Language Barbie may log on to the Toys ``R'' Us Web site.
