Mirari - Little Apple Doll Exclusive to Hot Topic - In Stores Summer 2005
June 2005 - Only 5,500 of these dolls have been produced and Mirari is only available to buy through Hot Topic in a striking silver-foiled collector's box. To add to the intrigue, certificates of authenticity, have been inserted at random into 500 of these boxes. These certificates have been individually signed by Ufuoma Urie, artist of the Little Apple Dolls.
Underground Toys and Hot Topic have been working together to make Mirari possible. Like all Little Apple Dolls, Mirari has a name reflecting her character. The Latin meaning for Mirari is "wondrous or to wonder."
Ufuoma Urie, was clearly inspired by a Gwen Stefani video when creating Mirari who stands at 13" in a striking blue outfit. She also researched the Gothic Lolita and Harajuku fashion in great depth.
Mirari's tale is a tragic one. She finds herself in an aged body only seeing her true self when she peers into an old mirror. The mirror, she discovers, is a doorway to wondrous world's Mirari had dreamt of.
Despite her conspicuous outfit, Mirari is no less chilling than preceding dolls. As with all Little Apple Dolls her face is not fully formed. There are dark holes where her eyes are meant to be and she looks the way she does because she inhabits the place between life and death; the "Inbetween Place." In the Inbetween, everything is with and without life.
Her storybook tells us of her making the most wondrous things. She could make something out of almost anything and other things out of nothing. She finds herself in an aged body only seeing her true self when she peers into an old mirror.
Little Apple Doll fans have been both seduced and disturbed by the dolls. Series 1 are the founders, particularly Sine who gave Little Apple Red a persona in its own right and Series 2 have just been released. Little Apple Red acts as a protector of souls and guardian to the dolls.
The Little Apple first came to life in photographic works artist Ufuoma Urie had created that explored myths to do with creation and destruction. As a symbol in myth, fairytale and religious texts, the apple has represented temptation. It is an alluring yet tainted object not appearing as it seems - it is desired and ultimately unsettles those who come into contact with it.
Little Apple Red says you cannot always be sure of what you see and even if you choose to trust your eyes, it may lead you to a darker fate...
