WAYNE, N.J., Oct. 31, 2005 -- Toys "R" Us, Inc. will launch its 2005 holiday charity fundraising campaign on November 4, with a $1 million donation of toys. This marks the second year the retailer has teamed up with the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation and the Toys "R" Us Children's Fund, Inc. to collect cash and toy donations for America's needy children.
Beginning November 4 through December 24, 2005, Toys "R" Us and Babies "R" Us stores across the country will accept cash donations for the Toys For Tots campaign. Donations may also be made on-line at www.toysrus.com. Toys for Tots will use the monetary donations to purchase toys to benefit needy children in local communities.
Kick-off events to support the partnership will take place at all Toys "R" Us stores nationwide from Friday, November 4 through Sunday, November 6. At that time, individuals are also welcome to donate a new and unwrapped toy to Toys for Tots.
"At Toys "R" Us our focus is bringing joy to children," said John Barbour, president of Toys "R" Us, U.S. "Our goal this year is to raise $5.0 million dollars to help children through Toys For Tots. With the help of our customers and lots of fun in-store events throughout the holiday season, we know we can reach that goal."
According to the U.S. Census Bureau there are an estimated 13 million children in the United States living in poverty. Last year Toys "R" Us raised $3.6 million in its stores in addition to its original $1 million donation of toys.
"We are gratified that Toys "R" Us is once again one of our national corporate sponsors," said Lieutenant General Matthew Cooper, USMC (Ret), president and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. "Their support continues to make holiday dreams come true for millions of our nation's neediest children."
In 2004, Toys for Tots distributed over 19 million new toys to 7.5 million of the neediest youngsters.
Support for the partnership comes from Toys "R" Us corporate resources and the Toys "R" Us Children's Fund, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) foundation that contributes millions of dollars each year to children's programs and organizations.
