Todd McFarlane Gets Documented, Plus a Toy Update

todd_docu.jpg - 7299 Bytes'THE DEVIL YOU KNOW: Inside the Mind of Todd McFarlane' makes it's world premiere at Calgary Film Festival on September 30th, at 7 pm, and Todd, himself, is scheduled to attend the event.

The first-ever documentary project featuring Todd is the culmination of more than two years of research, and more than a year of filming and production. The National Film Board of Canada's description ofthe documentary reads as follows:

In less than a decade, Calgary's Todd McFarlane has turned his comic-book superhero, Spawn, into a business empire spanning comic books, movies, cartoons and toys.Spawn has turned its creator into the most successful comic-book artist in the history of the industry - a man wealthy enough to spend $3 million on a collectible baseball. And McFarlane has done it byhis own rules, not those of corporate America. Despite Spawn'sviolent image, McFarlane is a doting father and a devoted husband whose true love is baseball. The Devil You Know tries to understand this enigmatic man, and explores some of his most intimate thoughts. The film also looks at the obsessive devotion of McFarlane's fans. By following two of them as they try to keep up with the latest toys and comics, The Devil You Know explores the grey area where art turnsinto business, and a fan turns into a customer.
Tickets are available to attend the Saturday screening at allCanadian TicketMaster Outlets, by calling 403-777-0000 or visiting http://www.ticketmaster.ca.

To view a trailer of the film, visit http://www.nfb.ca/preview/index2.html, click on the "films' link, then click on "The Arts Seen" to get to the documentary's page.

Once the film debuts at the Calgary festival, fans will be able to order a home video copy beginning in November 2000. Future plans also call for Canadian and American television premieres. The NFB expects to keep the production in their active catalogue for at least three years.
