Repaints and Head Swaps and Toy Biz! Oh My! Well, actually most of the heads are brand new. But a new crop of Marvel Universe 10" figures have hit Kay Bee stores (and affiliated outlets). Included in this assortment are Daredevil (yellow & red costume), classic Wolverine, Spiderman (with Peter Parker head and Spidey mask), Jean Grey (can youy say Rogue repaint? I knew you could.), Professor X, Battle Damaged Wolverine (in white), and Captain America. It's like a game of spot the body parts because nearly all the figures have parts borrowed from other existing figures. But at least they aren't straight repaints. Instead, we get a nice assortment of new characters (and the apparently obligatory Wolverines). All in all, not too bad (of course, in our opinion, the 10" Deadpool is still the best example of making a new character out of existing parts).
"Holy Variations Batman!" Batgirl from the new Batman and Robin line has gotten a packaging facelift. Originally, the insert had a photo of the actual action figure. However, a new version has been released with an artist's rendering of the character. This new insert fits in better with the rest of the B&R figure packaging. Now, can they do something about that Poison Ivy? Talk about beat with the ugly stick. That girl fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down!
And while we're talking about Batman & Robin, we thought we'd give you the scoop on some of those new "animation" style products you may have been seeing in stores. As you may know, the Batman animated television series is getting a facelift for next season. Dick Grayson will become Nightwing and Tim Drake will step in as Robin. You may have seen what looks like animation style products featuring Batman and his Gotham city playmates, including a character that looks awfully similar to Nightwing. But relax, these are not the models for the revamped animated series. Actually, they are promotional items for this summer's Batman & Robin motion picture. Information from the folks who license this stuff tells us that this animated style promotion for the movie is an attempt to broaden the marketing appeal. Look for this style to appear on stuff from sheets to beach towels to party favors. Sorry folks, no action figures or other toys based on the movie are planned in this style for now. But keep watching this space for news on upcoming figures in the Batman animated line of figures. Should be exciting!
New Star Wars figures pictured at Joe Leung's Toys! Go Now!
New Chaos! Comics figures, including Lady Death pictured at Mania's Toy Time. Total Justice is cancelled!!! The third assortment will be the last. Due to lackluster sales and poor buyer support, the line has already been mothballed by Kenner, less than one year after first hitting the pegs. The fourth series was to have been Blue Beetle, Dr. Polaris, Green Lantern 2, and Flash 2. It is unknown at this time if these have actually been sculpted or not.
TOYFARE magazine announces it's next exclusives as Bullseye and Firestar! When it goes monthly in July, the picture on the right is what you'll be fighting for. If it stays like that, it looks to be a repainted Punisher 5" with a Scorpion 5" head. No word yet on how limited he will be. August's TOYFARE brings us Firestar, which is yet another Medusa repaint. Good luck in getting your hands on these.
Spider-Man hits FAO Schwarz! This set of Spidey/Symbiote, and Spidey/Capt. Universe is selling for $20.00 at an FAO Schwartz near you. Seeing that their exclusive sets from the last two years (Dark Phoenix set and Hearts of Darkness set) are still available, you probably won't need to rush to get this set. And if you are hankerin' for more Spidey info, be sure to visit our Spiderman Archives now maintained by our own resident web-head, Mike Fichera. Harley Quinn has hit the stores! This long awaited Batman figure is accompanied by her main squeeze, the Machine Gun Joker. Before you go paying ridiculous prices for this newly released pair, we should probably tell you that they are both packed four to a case. After the initial frenzy dies down, you should be able to find these at retail. Most of the early sightings have been at Target stores so check there first if you have one near you. Good luck!
