2002
International Model & Hobby Expo:
Playing Mantis

Polar Lights has the license to create model kits based on the ships from Star Trek. The first two models are the original NCC-1701 from Star Trek (the original series) and the NX-01 from Enterprise.

The NCC-1701 is about 11 inches long when assembled, so it is 1:1000 scale. It is a "skill level 1 snap kit" and has box art by Chris White. The 1701 will be released in July 2003, and will be available in mass market stores. As you can see in the pictures below, different pieces are included so that you can build your "favorite version" of the 1701, for example, with or without the lights on the top of the saucer section. (There were three different configurations of the ship on display.) To learn more about the different versions, see how the display models were assembled.

The NX-01 is about 24 inches long when assembled, which is about 1:350 scale. It is a "skill level 2 glue kit," making it a bit more complex to assemble than the 1701. The box features art by Chris White. The NX-01 will be released in the Third Quarter of 2003, mostly in hobby stores rather than the mass market. (Only the box for the NX-01 was on display at the Expo, not the actual model.)
