Spielberg To Direct Harry Potter Movie - Toys Likely To Follow

potter_cvr.jpg - 8018 BytesLooks like the legion of Harry Potter fans wishing for toys based on the literary phenomenon are going to get their wish after all - but not quite yet. They have to wait for Harry Potter: The Movie.

Steven Spielberg may soon make some magic of his own, reportedly opting to make J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone his next project according to Variety magazine.

As previously cited in Daily Variety (Dec. 23, 1999), Spielberg was given an exclusive peek at the 138-page first draft of the Harry Potter script adaptation by Warner Bros. late last year. The London Times reports that the powerful director has decided to helm and produce Potter, the popular tale of a schoolboy wizard. The decision put to rest speculation about which project the DreamWorks exec would choose next.

Spielberg was known to have been considering two other projects, Minority Report with Tom Cruise, and a Stanley Kubrick story outline entitled A.I. The filmmaker is already in development with DreamWorks projects Memoirs of a Geisha and the biopic Lindbergh.

Of course, we all know what a family-oriented Spielberg movie means - toys, and lots of 'em. It's just a matter of time - and waiting for the movie to get made.
