SpongeBob Squarepants: Superstar in the Making?

SpongeBob Squarepants is a wacky animated series airing on cable's Nickelodeon channel. The show, which launched in July 1999 has been steadily attracting viewers, with over 12 million people watching the show in February.So, with the show's increasing popularity the time is right for SpongeBob and the zany cast of characters to make their way into the wonderful world of merchandising. While the series is geared for a 6-11 year old audience, it's appeal is spreading in the teen and college-age demographics as well. The first merchandise for the show will be geared towards the specialty and novelty market, and will later spread to mass market retailers in late 20001 if the products perform as well as expected. The first novelty items, such as water-filled keychains, water-filled stationery items, dancing can figures that move to music and a sand-and-water game, will begin appearing in stores this month. Mattel, a long-time merchandising partner for Nickelodeon, has thus developed the Talking SpongeBob, hitting stores like Hot Topics, Zany Brainy and other U.S. specialty retailers by holiday 2000 and will develop more electronic-type products for 2001. The plush toy utters humorous Bob-isms like "Let's bring it around town." [Updated 5/02/2000]
