INTERVIEW WITH GARBAGE ROBOTS [under the Hyperchild label]
John Wong [Action-HQ.com] > Hi Daniam, how did you get into making designer toys?
Daniam Chou [Garbage Robots] > I have been a graphic designer for many years working from graphic design houses to web industry. Having provided work on the client side for so long, I wanted to create something which is cool and representation of my ideas.
Action figures have been in pop-culture in Hong Kong for a long time and I believed I could do something cool and have fun with it. So that's why I started with it. It gives me the opportunity to create my own character design which has [emotions and feelings] soul.
John Wong [Action-HQ.com] > Tell me about Garbage Robot and how did you come up with the idea?
Daniam Chou [Garbage Robots] > Garbage Robots is what I feel everyone dreams for. In our lives, time is limited. One can reflect back on their life and realized that they have achieved nothing worthwhile and in sense want to live longer. That is the premise of Garbage Robot. A group of robots in my storyline has expiration dates and once expired, will be treated as garbage and recycled. The character "Rubble" represents us and our search for achievement. The representation of his search for the Garbage Robot's Holy Grail: a mythical power source known only as the Infinite Battery is that struggle for achievement. Anyway, you can find out more about this in my website at www.garbagerobots.com.
John Wong [Action-HQ.com] > That's awesome. Your Character Rubble reminds me of Rockman. I think Rockman fans will really enjoy this. Are there any similarities?
Daniam Chou [Garbage Robots] > I like Rockman, Astro Boy and Dr slump; those characters always makes people feel happy and are cute. I watched a lot of Anime and read a lot of comics in my childhood and it ended up affecting my style of designing my Garage Robots.
John Wong [Action-HQ.com] > They look really cool. How long did the whole production process take and did you run into any problems?
Daniam Chou [Garbage Robots] > I started designing the characters around April last year and from sculpting the prototype to final production, it will almost take a year! It was quite long for me as this is not my full-time job and I've learn a lot in the process, especially working with the factory in china as they are quite tricky! I was faced with many problems such as communication with the factory especially in regards to quality. And you alway need to keep an eye on them every single step of the way.
John Wong [Action-HQ.com] > Rubble will be available this month but how about the others? And are you planning to come out with a comic or anything else?
Daniam Chou [Garbage Robots] > After launching Rubble, Rhythm the female robot dancer will be the second one. Actually we already started sculpting the rest of the garbage robots. There are a total of 7, and I hope it won't takes 7 years to release them all!
Not comic as of yet as there are different types of media that I would like to work with, like animation or simple flash movie. Eventually anything people would be interested but as of right now, I am very busy.
