Wal-Mart Canada's Top 10 Toys

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Dec. 11 - Wal-Mart Canada today released the company's fifth annual "top 10" list of the most popular toys in Canada. For the fifth year in a row the retailer has polled its toy buyers and stores nationwide to compile the annual "Wal-Mart" list of toys that Canadians are buying most for the holiday shopping season of 2002. Here they are:
1. Leap Pad -- $69.96
Electronic educational games are one of the hottest trends in toys this year, and Leap Pad is leading the pack. Leap Pad is an electronic, interactive book that teaches children how to read, with an emphasis on phonics and vocabulary.

2. Radio Control Cars -- $19.92
These miniature racing cars have taken the country by storm as one of this year's most popular toys. They are radio controlled, turbo powered, and they come with a car base that serves as a self-charger.
Six car models are available.

3. Cranium Game -- $43.93
Board games have emerged as one of the strongest gift trends for 2002. From traditional favourites such as Monopoly and Scrabble to modern variations including Simpsons Clue and Simpsons Chess, the range of popular games is very wide. At the top of the list is Cranium, this year's best-selling game that tests the intellect and exercises the brain.

4. MicroPets -- $12.92
These tiny, battery-operated pets can walk, zig zag, turn around and light up. A special voice-response system enables them to respond to 18 distinct commands. They can play, sing, and interact with each other. There are 10 different MicroPets available.

5. Mega Bloks' "Dragon's Warrior Fortress" -- $44.96
The popularity of Mega Bloks reflects the current fascination with construction toys. For this holiday season the most popular is the Mega Bloks' Dragon's Warrior Fortress which lets you construct an epic battle scene featuring a large fortress, dragons, armies and horses.

6. Singing Starz Karaoke Machine -- $124.93
This innovative karaoke machine lets the user star in his or her own music video. The machine plugs into the television set and allows the singer to see and hear themself singing and dancing on television. The machine can also be used to record a "debut performance" on a VCR.

7. Yu Gi Oh! Trading Cards (Booster Packs) -- $5.92
Based on a popular Japanese television series, Yu Gi Oh! is this year's trading-card sensation reminiscent of the enormously popular Pokemon phenomenon in previous years. Yu Gi Oh! is a magical world of mythical warriors that has captivated youngsters across Canada. The magical universe of Yu Gi Oh! is played out in trading cards that come in various quantities, the most popular being the Booster Pack which contains nine trading cards.

8. Fisher Price Little People -- $34.94
For more than 40 years Fisher Price Little People toys have been helping children make important new discoveries about the world through imaginative play. These miniature characters and settings help youngsters develop their imaginations. This year the worlds created by the Little People Farm, the Little People Home, and the Little People Train are top sellers for tots.

9. Toy Story 2 Interactive Train -- $49.91
This talking, interactive train-set is based on the popular movie Toy Story 2. The train includes five characters, animated movements, sound effects, and a five-function remote control.

10. Mary-Kate and Ashley Dolls -- $19.94
Without question, Mary-Kate and Ashley merchandise has taken Canada by storm. From sportswear, hair accessories, watches, sunglasses and shoes, Mary-Kate and Ashley products have become a "must have" for tween girls across Canada. This year, dolls modeled after the extraordinarily popular Olsen twins are extremely popular for tweens for the holiday season.
