Playskool Recalls 550,000 Klackeroo Toys

Hasbro Inc's Playskool unit is recalling about 550,000 Klackeroo toys because the toy's end knobs can detach, allowing small parts to come loose and posing a choking hazard to infants and young children, the U.S. consumer watchdog agency said Thursday. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said the Pawtucket, R.I.-based company had received 10 reports of the toy's knobs detaching and small toy parts were found in the mouths of several young children. No injuries were reported. Parents should take the toy away from infants and young children immediately, and contact Playskool at 888-671-9764 or visit the company's Web site at www.hasbro.com to receive a free, redesigned replacement toy. Klackeroo is a brightly coloured toy with orange plastic rods and small geometric shapes that move through a centre purple ball. Solid-coloured knobs with animal faces or the sun and moon imprinted on them cap both ends of each orange rod. When shaken, the rods move through the ball and the geometric shapes slide along each rod, making a ``clacking'' sound. The knobs are green, yellow, blue and red. The Playskool logo is imprinted on one end knob and ``MADE IN CHINA'' is imprinted on the centre ball. The toys were sold around the country at toy stores and other mass merchandise outlets, including Toys R Us, from October 1997 through September 2000 for about $8. The recalled products will be replaced by a redesigned Klackeroo toy, carrying the model number 5542, which will feature a red centre ball with no sliding geometric shapes. Playskool last month recalled 420,000 Busy Poppin' Pals toys after two children who put broken springs from the toy into their mouths suffered lacerations. [Posted 9/15/2000]
