DALLAS, Nov. 7 -- You know that holiday shopping has changed when you can make your purchases in your nightgown. Perusing gift ideas via the Web would have seemed like a futuristic pipe dream only a few years ago. Now, millions of shoppers point and click their way from toys to treasures without leaving home. The trick is finding a source for eclectic gifts that combines pizzazz with creativity. A visit to the DMA's site at http://www.DallasMuseumofArt.org reveals decorative items like brightly-colored "Googa" coo-coo clocks and high fashion vanity boxes--pink carrying cases in a variety of sizes that might serve as a jewelry case, a makeup kit, or a chic evening bag for a formal occasion. "This is our first Christmas to offer e-shopping from the DMA Web site," says Donna Herring, general manager of the Museum Store at the Dallas Museum of Art. "But from the time our Museum Store went on-line, we've been serving customers from as far away as Australia and as close as an office building a few blocks away. An art museum has great cachet, and we've concentrated on offering unique products that appeal to every age and interest." Donna says that her experience with sales via the Museum's recently redesigned Web page has proved that people are hungry for one site where they can order unusual gifts for a variety of people. Leafing Through Flowers is the ultimate coffee table book for the gardener or flower arranger, offering 238 pages of exquisite photos of floral sculptures that go far beyond the conventional boundaries of floral displays. The "Mover and Shaker" necklace, bracelet, and earrings are based on classical designs of ancient Greek earrings found in the DMA's collection of antiquities. The artistic businessperson will appreciate metal business card holders, one with an excellent reproduction of "The Kiss" by Gustav Klimt and the other with a Dali-esque image that invokes thoughts about the universe. "Cat-a-pillers," stuffed kittens with decorative jewels and sporting butterfly wings, bring a sense of magic and whimsy to a child's bedroom. One of the secrets to the DMA Museum Store's success is the staff's ability to pack and ship orders with very little turnaround time. "We've got it down to a science," says Donna. "It beats the heck out of schlepping through the mall. Pointing and clicking is the way to go."
