TONKA Super Truck Racing Series

TONKA super truck

August 2003 -- Hasbro, Inc. has signed an agreement with the Super Truck Racing Association of North America (STRANA) for its TONKA brand to become title sponsor of the inaugural STRANA series in the U.S. and Canada. The TONKA Super Truck Racing Series events kicked off on August 15 at the Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada and is bringing its fast-paced, high-energy action to Elkhart Lake, WI beginning Aug. 22 for a three-day event at Road America.

Imagine some of the biggest high-powered trucks (minus trailers, of course) on the road flying around the track at a scorching pace, and you just start to get what Super Truck Racing is all about.

Super truck racing was established in Europe almost 20 years ago, and attracts hundreds of thousands of fans to racing venues every year. STRANA takes the most successful elements of the European model and combines them with a distinct American identity to give race fans what they love: big trucks, high speeds and incredible competition.

This year's special "TONKA 2003 Super Truck Celebrity Challenge" events, showcasing superstars of road racing competing in STRANA trucks for charity, will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 this fall. Celebrity drivers who've signed up to drive the super trucks include Boris Said, 2002 Trans Am Series Champion, and Anthony Lazzaro, a two-time Formula Ford 2000 Series Champion ('94 and '95). A truly awesome TONKA-sponsored and badged prototype race truck will perform in each super truck event this year. This year's events are a precursor to the TONKA Super Truck Racing Series, which is slated to begin in 2004.

"STRANA is bringing some of the toughest, most powerful trucks to the U.S. and that's what the TONKA brand is all about," said Todd Rywolt, Vice President of Marketing, for Hasbro's vehicles group. "Generations of boys and their dads have played TONKA tough and together with the STRANA series, we can bring them more action and excitement."

"The name TONKA has meant big, tough trucks for generations of North Americans. It's also synonymous with fun, family entertainment," said STRANA Executive Director Brian Till. "That's exactly what STRANA is all about and why this match-up is perfect."

"STRANA and the Tonka Series are still in their developmental stage," said Till "However, because of the support of Hasbro and our other sponsors, we can give race fans a taste of what super truck racing is about this year."

In addition to series naming rights, TONKA retains exclusive merchandising rights for a variety of toys and collectables. The TONKA brand will also be featured in all advertising and promotional materials, decals on every super truck and transporter, a broadcast package, and additional family oriented, race-site hospitality and promotional activities. A special STRANA tow truck used at events will be decorated with a TONKA paint scheme.

The TONKA 2003 Super Truck Racing events are sanctioned by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) and will run in support of the popular American Le Mans Series. Sites include:

  • Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI on Aug. 22-24;
  • Road Atlanta in Atlanta on October 15-17.

Other STRANA sponsors include Haldex, Alcoa, Continental Tires, ArvinMeritor, www.1800DRIVERS.com, Truckin' Bozo Radio Network and America Trucking On The Road magazine.

Based in suburban Columbus, Ohio, STRANA is the governing body for class-8 super truck racing in North America. Its mission is to promote super truck racing and the trucking and transportation industry.

TONKA trucks were first introduced in 1947 and enjoy a well-earned reputation of being among the "toughest" vehicles in the world. More than 230 million TONKA vehicles have been sold in the brand's 56-year history.

Hasbro is a worldwide leader in children's and family leisure time entertainment products and services, including the design, manufacture and marketing of games and toys ranging from traditional to high-tech. Both internationally and in the U.S., its PLAYSKOOL, TONKA, MILTON BRADLEY, PARKER BROTHERS, TIGER, and WIZARDS OF THE COAST brands and products provide the highest quality and most recognizable play experiences in the world.
