Any advice on Gameboy Mario games?

I'm a few generations behind on Gameboys, and we are getting the boy a new one.

He really likes the Mario games on the ancient Gameboy Advance, but I'm lost about which game to start him on for the 3DS XL. If there were just one or two available, it would be easier than walking into the store and seeing a dozen options.

Does anyone have any opinions on which Mario games are the best for younger kids?

Thanks for any help/guidance on this!

It will sort of depend upon what type of Mario games he prefers.

If you want the traditional 2D side scroller (think Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario 3) The you are probably looking for the New Super Mario Brothers (DS) and New Super Mario Bros 2 (3DS)

If you prefer a 3D Mario game, the only one I know of for either system is the remake of Super Mario 64 for the DS.

There are also a number of action RPG style games under the "Mario & Luigi" title. I've only played the third, Bowser's Inside Story.

Of course there are also two Mario Kart games out too. Mario Kart DS is the older one, but a very good game. Mario Kart 7 is a 3DS game. But I've never played it nor know how it compares to the DS game.

Thanks, Dan. It hadn't occurred to me to think about in terms of genre, if that's the right word. That should make it easier to figure out, and we'll probably start with something similar to the side-scrollers he is used to.

I'll also look into the one he saw a commercial for today. He was a bit hypnotized by it. Smile
